SAN FRANCISCO -- Simply adding L-histidine to rice-based oral rehydration solution could greatly reduce deaths related to cholera, Dr. Golam H. Rabbani said at the annual Digestive Disease Week.

In a controlled trial of 126 cholera patients seen in a hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh, the addition of L-histidine to rehydration solution reduced stool volume by 22% over 72 hours of treatment and observation, compared with controls, said Dr. Rabbani of the International Center for Diarrheal Disease Research, Bangladesh, India.

There also was a reduction in the mean time of illness, 42 hours for the treated patients vs. 47 hours for the controls.

L-Histidine binds to prostaglandin [E.sub.2] in the small intestine, preventing the formation of cyclic AMP that drives the process of hypersecretion.
