SAN DIEGO -- An outbreak of multidrug-resistant Salmonella newport in Northern California was traced to Mexican-style cheeses and creams, Dr. Michele Cheung reported in a late-breaking poster presentation at the annual Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.
It's important to continue to advise patients--especially those in the Hispanic community and others at high risk for morbidity from Salmonella infection--of the potential hazards of consuming unpasteurized or inadequately pasteurized dairy products, said Dr. Cheung of the California Department of Health Services, Berkeley.
