PARIS -- Topical tacrolimus repigments significant areas of vitiligo-affected skin and works well regardless of how long the patients have had the disease, Dr. Pearl Grimes reported at the 20th World Congress of Dermatology.
In a 12-patient study conducted by Dr. Grimes and associates at the University of California, Los Angeles, topical application of the immunomodulatory agent, which is marketed by Fujisawa Healthcare Inc. for atopic dermatitis under the trade name Proropic, led to repigmentation in 75%-100% of the vitiligo-affected areas among 4 patients and in 50%-75% of the areas in 7 patients. One patient had a moderate response with a 25%-50% improvement.
The patients' mean age was 22 years, with a mean 7-year history of either localized or generalized vitiligo affecting less than 20% of their cutaneous surface. They were treated with 0.1% tacrolimus ointment twice a day for a mean of 14 weeks.
