NEW YORK--Dialysis patients who used statin therapy had a decreased need for erythropoietin, the drug that boosts hemoglobin counts and prevents anemia, according to a study presented at the annual conference of the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs.

"Dialysis patients who require a lot of erythropoietin might try statins, which are a lot cheaper than erythropoietin and have the added benefit of lipid lowering," said Dr. Rasib Raja of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia. Dialysis patients commonly have high lipid levels, he added.

Dialysis patients typically receive injections of erythropoietin at each dialysis session to treat insufficient hemoglobin counts and the related anemia associated with the treatment. The lower the hemoglobin count, the more ...
