SAN DIEGO -- Most elderly people with mild to moderate dementia can understand at least one visual pain scale and should be asked about their pain more often, researchers in Switzerland have found.
Severely demented patients may not be able to comprehend any of the assessment tools used and should have their pain evaluated through behavioral cues such as deportment and psychosocial interactions, Dr. Sophie Pautex said in a poster session at the World Congress on Pain.
