Breast self-exams did not reduce a woman's risk of dying from breast cancer in a large 10-year study conducted in China.
After 10-11 years of follow-up, death rates from breast cancer were not significantly different between 132,979 women taught breast self-examination (BSE) techniques and 133,085 controls who were not taught the techniques (4% vs. 4.5%).
Although there is no reason to discourage women from performing BSE, women who do self exams are increasing their odds of undergoing breast biopsies for benign tumors, said Dr. David B. Thomas of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, and his colleagues.
According to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, there is insufficient evidence to recommend for or against the teaching of BSE. The American Cancer Society recommends that women perform BSE monthly beginning at age 20.
