SAN ANTONIO -- Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease have an increased risk of severe vertebral fractures, which often go unrecognized by their physicians, based on a study with 296 patients.

"Patients with [chronic obstructive pulmonary disease] should be targeted for the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis-related fractures," Nicole C. Ferko said in a poster presentation at the annual meeting of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.

Treatment with inhaled or oral corti-costeroids and smoking are two factors associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that can cause osteoporosis and may explain the link, said Ms. Ferko, a clinical epidemiologist at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont.
