ORLANDO, FLA. -- Zoledronic acid decreases the risk of bone fractures associated with metastatic prostate cancer, Dr. Fred Saad said at the annual meeting of the American Urological Association.
Dr. Saad's multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled investigation studied 643 patients with hormone-refractory prostate cancer and at least one bone metastasis.
Patients received either placebo or 4 mg zoledronic acid in a 15-minute infusion every 3 weeks for 115 months. In the active group, 33% experienced a skeletal-related event while 44% of the placebo group experienced an event.
Zoledronic acid was associated with fewer pathologic fractures; 13% of the active group experienced a fracture, while 22% of the placebo group experienced a fracture.
