Warnings and contraindications have been added to the labeling for the antimalarial drug mefloquine to reflect reports of psychiatric effects.
Mefloquine, marketed as Lariam by Roche Pharmaceuticals, is approved for the treatment and prevention of malaria. The revised label now says that if a patient taking the drug for prophylaxis develops psychiatric symptoms such as acute anxiety, depression, restlessness, or confusion, these symptoms "may be considered prodromal to a more serious event," and the drug should be stopped and replaced with another medication.
In addition, prophylactic use is now contraindicated in people with a recent history of depression, generalized anxiety disorder, a history of convulsions, psychosis, or schizophrenia or other major psychiatric disorders.
