Summerville firefighters will be knocking on Brownsville doors Saturday, but not to alarm residents.
Instead, they want to help protect neighborhood residents from the dangers of fire by offering a smoke detector checkup and free smoke detectors.
Summerville Fire Chief Robert Brown said the Public Safety Department received a generous donation of 250 smoke detectors from the North Main Street Wal-Mart, Lowe's and Home Depot.
"We've always had an ongoing smoke detector program," Brown said, but this donation allows the department to make a concentrated effort in the neighborhood.
