1. Primary open-angle glaucoma (chronic simple glaucoma) is a condition that progresses insidiously, causing optic nerve damage and visual field loss. The aim of drug treatment is to reduce intra-ocular pressure. The condition contrasts with angle-closure glaucoma, which presents acutely with a painful red eye and reduced visual acuity, and is a medical emergency.

2. Topical drug treatment for open-angle glaucoma will be initiated by an ophthalmologist but GPs need to be aware of the increasing variety of treatments, side-effects and interactions. Treatments work by either reducing aqueous humour production or facilitating its drainage.
