Holland's most famous automaker was reborn after 71 years.
After producing roughly 3000 cars between 1900 and 1926-not to mention 100 fighter aircraft during World War I-the original Spyker company closed up shop. The company motto, ``Nulla tenaci invia est via'' (``For the tenacious no road is impassable''), may be in reference to its 1903 60-hp car that employed the world's first six-cylinder engine and functioning four-wheel-drive system. In 1922 the Maybach-engined C4 set 24-hour endurance records at the Brooklands raceway. As night driving was not permitted there then, the record was referred to as the ``Double 12.''
Jump to 1990 and the brain of Maarten de Bruijn, an engineer seeking to build the perfect sports car. After years of scraping by and show- ing around his Audi V8 mid-engined two-seater prototype called Silvestris, de Bruijn got togeth- er with fellow Dutchman Victor Muller in 1997 to found the new Spyker company. The first all-aluminum-2204 pounds!-C8 Spyder with the well-known normally aspirated Audi 4.2-liter V8 was unveiled at the 2000 British motor show. Since then we've been given the C8 Laviolette and C8 Double 12 R Le Mans racer.
