Cunningham cut
Bob Lutz may be tearing it up at General Motors, but his dream to resurrect the Cunningham nameplate with a $250,000 sports coupe is dead.
Since Lutz and a team of investors launched the effort in 2000, Cunningham Motor Co. has faced major hurdles that are now proving insurmountable. Officials told Automotive News that a legal complaint levied last month by Briggs Cunningham III (AW, Oct. 7), accusing company officers, including GM vice chairman Lutz, of forcing Briggs out of the company, broke the camel's back. Cunningham Motor has spent nearly all of its $4 million seed money and has suspended operations indefinitely, including its centerpiece $85 million Cunningham C7 development program.
Cobra stalled
Ford has temporarily stopped production of the 2003 SVT Cobra due to quality concerns. Ford officials are mum on what's wrong with the supercharged Mustangs, but assembly plant sources told media that the problem originates with the 4.6-liter V8. Ford aims to resume production Nov. 15 and will begin delivering finished Cobras that were held back because of the snafu.
