Perhaps no automotive designer has penned us back to the days of yore more than J Mays. Mays, best known for ``retrofuture'' designs including Volkswagen New Beetle, Ford Thunderbird, GT40 and Forty-Nine concept, is charged with sketching the future for Ford Motor Co.'s portfolio.
The 48-year-old design chief will give the keynote address Jan. 8, 2003, at the 10th Annual AutoWeek Design Forum at Cobo Hall in Detroit. The one-day forum will carry the theme ``Expect the Unexpected: How Design Helps Companies Break from Tradition,'' and will feature a roster of styling execs who have shelved the status quo and established fresh design direction with products like the Mercedes-Benz ultra-luxo Maybach, Honda Element and Renault Vel Satis.
While reintroducing classics seems to be his forte, Mays' claim to influence is deeper than his retro bent.
