CART lands Bridgestone
* At the Fontana race weekend, CART and Bridgestone jointly announced a one-year deal in which Bridgestone will serve as ``presenting sponsor'' for the series in 2003. (As in ``Bridgestone presents...'') CART CEO Chris Pook says the rest of the title, as well as a new series logo, will be revealed at the CART awards dinner in Miami Nov. 22.
Most speculation centers on Ford becoming the new series title sponsor, replacing the soon-to-depart FedEx. While no cash figures on the Bridgestone deal were released, both Pook and Bridgestone/Firestone racing boss Al Speyer said the true benefits were in increased cross-promotion and marketing at the tire maker's retail level. That contrasts markedly with the FedEx title sponsorship, which appeared to operate mainly as a B to B program for FedEx.
Fernandez will stay
* Also in Fontana, Adrian Fernandez announced his team and sponsors will remain in CART for two more years, and that he continues to seek funding for a second car in the series. Pook asserted that he will assist Fernandez's efforts to campaign a second car ``in any way I can,'' presumably from the $30 million recently authorized by CART's corporate board several weeks ago for series development and promotion.
Fernandez left open the possibility of also running a car in the Indy Racing League next year.
Fernandez, who suffered a neck injury in the first-lap crash at Surfers Paradise and had Max Papis filling in at Fontana, also announced he would test Luis Diaz at Sebring this week in the hopes of using him in the final race of the season at Mexico City.
