As Italian car manufacturers move increasingly toward creating in-house design studios, Italian designers are losing ground to out-of-country talent.
The latest example is Automobili Lamborghini, which will open its own styling center, Centro Stile Lamborghini, next spring and put 37-year-old Belgian Luc Donckerwolke (right) at the helm. In its 39 years of activity, Lamborghini has always relied on external designers, traditionally Carrozzeria Bertone and Marcello Gandini. But Donckerwolke, an Audi designer, penned Lambo's latest sports car, the Murcielago.
At the new Lamborghini design studio, Donckerwolke will report to Walter de' Silva (left), design director of the Audi Group, which includes Audi, Lamborghini and Seat. Audi bought Lamborghini in 1998.
