2002 NOV 20 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Maria G. Essig, MS, ELS, senior medical writer - The timing of immunization with a meningococcal C conjugate (MCC) conjugated to a tetanus or diphtheria toxoid relative to the administration of a diphtheria-tetanus booster did not affect the protective ability of the vaccine, according to a report in the journal Infection and Immunity.

"In order to plan for the wide-scale introduction of meningococcal C conjugate vaccine for United Kingdom children up to 18 years old, phase II trials were undertaken to investigate whether there was any interaction between MCC vaccines conjugated to tetanus toxoid (TT) or a derivative of diphtheria toxin (CRM[subscript]197) and diphtheria-tetanus vaccines given for boosting at school entry or leaving," explained Moya Burrage at the Centre for Applied Microbiology and Research in Wiltshire and colleagues in the United Kingdom.

The investigators evaluated the results of vaccination in 1766 children who received 1 out of 3 MCC vaccines conjugated to CRM[subscript]197 or TT either along with, 1 month before, or 1 month after a diphtheria-tetanus booster (Effect of vaccination with carrier protein on response to meningococcal C conjugate vaccines and value of different immunoassays as predictors of protection. Infect Immun, 2002;70(9):4946-4954).

High antibody titers to the serogroup C polysaccharide that indicated establishment of protection were induced by all 3 of the MCC vaccines. Although administration of the diphtheria-tetanus booster 1 month before the MCC-TT vaccine attenuated immune response to the MCC-TT vaccine, the response was adequate to confer protection.

"Prior or simultaneous administration of a diphtheria-containing vaccine did not affect ...
