THE COVER of this volume of essays bears a slightly out-of-focus photograph of a section of a quilt. An analogy is drawn between book and bedcover by editor(/photographer) Lydia Hamessley though she allows that, in comparison with a quilt, the collection "lacks a central focus-point." Co-editor Elaine Barkin, too, admits that "the search for a title was often vexing, insofar as neither of us was able to get a sharp fix on the 'aboutness' of the collection." This is understandable; what marks this American anthology out from many others devoted to feminist musicology and gender is the extent of the contribution of articles by composers, and of course, the fact that one of ...
