2002 NOV 14 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- A fracture can indicate more than a just a broken bone - it may be a warning sign of an underlying diagnosis of osteoporosis.
Speaking at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons' Orthopaedics Update 2002 web conference, Laura Lowe Tosi, MD associate professor of orthopedic surgery and pediatrics at George Washington University School of Medicine and Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC, said, "Osteoporosis is a medical condition characterized by low bone density. Although bone density is not the only factor that determines bone strength, we know that individuals with low bone density are at high risk for fracture and refracture."
"The risk of a serious fracture increases as much as 2- to 20-fold after a first fracture in certain high-risk groups. Although medical science has developed good protocols for the management of most fractures, the unfortunate reality is that many patients, particularly those who suffer hip fractures, are at high risk for premature death or loss of independence following fracture. Clearly identifying osteoporosis early and initiating treatment is essential," added Tosi.
