2002 NOV 14 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- The American Cancer Society reminds women that early detection is the best way to survive breast cancer.
Breast cancer will strike more than 200,000 times in the U.S. in 2002 and claim more than 40,000 lives - more than 4,000 of them in California, according to the Society.
The American Cancer Society continues to recommend that every woman age 40 and older have an annual mammogram. Numerous studies have shown that early detection saves lives and increases treatment options.
The 5-year survival rate for breast cancer is 98% among individuals whose cancer has not spread beyond the breast at time of diagnosis. Declines in breast cancer deaths have been attributed, in large part, to the use of regular screening mammography.
