An old distinction has blurred in recent years as more commercial banks began making home mortgages and joining Federal Home Loan banks and more thrifts started making business loans and seeking more "bank-like" balance sheets.
Indeed, the differences between banks and thrifts now seem so slight that their trade groups in many states have set aside longstanding rivalries and decided to merge.
