2002 NOV 7 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Radiation after mastectomy reduces recurrence rates for breast cancer patients, according to a new study at the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology's Annual Meeting in New Orleans.

Eighteen hundred patients were treated with mastectomy followed by doxorubicin-based chemotherapy in five prospective clinical trials. The cohort for this study consisted of the 469 patients who also received postoperative radiation by physician preference. Their results were compared with the 1031 patients who did not receive postoperative radiation. Median follow-up time of all patients was 10 years.

Postmastectomy radiation reduced isolated local-regional recurrence rates for patients in all nodal categories. Local-regional recurrence for patients with involvement of 20% or more lymph nodes was reduced from 27% in patients who did not receive radiation to 11% in those treated with radiation.
