John Thomas, an easygoing, friendly Mississippian, is the Michael Schumacher of autocrossing.

When we told him that, he laughed, and one of his competitors who was walking past said, ``Yeah, except that we like John.''

There's a lot of liking going on in autocrossing, a sport that at the end of each summer for the past 30 years has culminated with the Sports Car Club of America's Nationals. For the past eight of those years, this week-long World Series of autocross has taken place in friendly Topeka, Kansas, where the SCCA officially makes its new home Nov. 15.
