Supreme Court favors drug firm in case that left woman paralyzed

The Ohio Supreme Court has ruled in favor of a drug company in a case in which a Fremont, Ohio, woman became paralyzed as a result of being treated with the drug Chymodiactin.

Yvonne Renfro had filed suit in Sandusky County Court against Smith Laboratories of San Diego, Calif., and other parties. She later settled claims against the doctor who administered the drug and the hospital where she was treated.

Renfro had argued that Smith was negligent for releasing the drug without sufficient research and knew of the dangerous properties of the drug but marketed it anyway. The company should …
