The art of talking business
Carolyn Dickson knows that business people have a lot to learn from artists--even though most believe that only the reverse is true.
As the founder of Voice-Pro Inc., the former classical actor and singer teaches executives to develop the vocal power and presentation techniques that performing artists practice. Whether they're speaking to a crowd of hundreds or simply networking at a cocktail party, Dickson teaches business people communication skills that can help them "save face," as well as money, time, and sometimes their voice.
"One of my acting students told me about a woman who was teaching stockbrokers in New York how to shout all day without losing their voices," recalls the 54-year-old communication expert of her first exposure to the concept. "I figured I'd rather have rich stockbrokers as clients than poor artists," she adds with a laugh.
Dickson's client list now reads like a Who's Who in Cleveland business, including Eaton Corp., General Electric, and TRW--and it's even expanding to include a few out-of-state firms. ...
