Unocal SCRAP Program Accepts First of 7,000 Cars

Unocal Corporation began scrapping the first of 7,000 model year 1970 and older vehicles registered in the Los Angeles Basin through a program designed to improve air quality by getting rid of some of the area's worst-polluting vehicles.

The company is paying individual owners $700 per vehicle eligible for SCRAP (South Coast Recycled Auto Program). As of May 31, nearly 6,000 owners of qualifying vehicles already have appointments to scrap their cars.
