Five hundred Chinese refugees huddled together on the rickety boat that carried Tang So away from his native home in southern China. Famine and ruthless Japanese troops had driven the young farmer to the seas, where after more than two months of rough sailing he landed in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Tang knows better than most the dangers of an expatriate life and the benefits of observing the age-old customs of the Chinese merchant class: blend in quietly, go about your business, don't rock the boat. During Pol Pot's murderous regime, the Khmer Rouge singled out his wife, three children and four grandchildren and, in the name of communist utopia, slaughtered them all.
