New architecture still 2-3 years off
By Daniel Farber
Boston -- Developing RISC-based computers is a high priority for Apple, company officials told financial analysts gathered here earlier this month for the Macworld Expo.
Several Apple RISC (reduced instruction set computing) projects are under way, but machines are two to three years away from completion, CEO John Sculley said.
Some industry watchers said that long of a lag might hurt Apple's prospects. "If Apple waits two to three years before developing a RISC machine, it will be much too late for the company to remain competitive," said Richard Shaffer, publisher of the Technologic Computer Letter in New York.
A RISC machine also would require new system software incompatible with current Mac software.
"The Macintosh Toolbox is antique and needs to be updated and made more portable to other processors," Shaffer said.
