Sandwich franchise stores take aim at fast-food giants

WALNUT CREEK - Since breaking into the Bay Area market in 1984, Subway Sandwiches and Salads - a franchise operation based in Milford, Conn. - has sprung up in numerous suburban strip malls and shopping centers from Monterey to Santa Rosa.

One hundred, to be exact.

And Deep Dhindsa, president of Subway Development Inc., the Bay Area franchising arm of the company, thinks he has McDonald's looking over his shoulder.

McDonald's currently operates 156 units in the Bay Area. Dhindsa predicts Subway will match McDonald's local total by 1993. McDonald's could not be reached for comment at press …
