V12s all around
Mercedes-Benz will soon have company for its 2003 S- and CL-Class 500-hp biturbo models in the V12 market.
BMW announced at the Paris motor show that by spring the 760i will be offered with a 6.0-liter V12; General Motors also confirms it will build a 7.5-liter V12 for use in an unspecified future Cadillac.
All is not bad news for Benz, however. The BMW engine makes just 443 hp and 456 lb-ft of torque (compared to 578 lb-ft for the 5.5-liter Mercedes V12). And while GM promises its all-aluminum V12 will produce at least 500 hp, so far the engine fits in just one of Cadillac's current vehicles, the Escalade sport/utility vehicle.
Space shaving
Audi engineers shaved two inches off the length of the popular 4.2-liter V8 used in the A6 and A8 to squeeze the engine into the 2003 allroad quattro. Originally shown at Geneva in March, the V8 allroad was on the stand at the Paris show, where reports had the higher-powered sport wagon debuting in the States next spring. The V8 delivers 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque-50 hp and 37 lb-ft more than the current 2.7-liter V6-powered allroad.
