Discontent on decontent
Kevin A. Wilson's Sept. 23 column on GM decontenting vehicles and its addiction to incentives was excellent. The auto enthusiast gave up on Detroit years ago and short of a miracle, won't be back. For example, no matter how hard GM tries, BMW drivers wouldn't dream of buying a Caddy. Not even an XLR. That view is not likely to change.

While I am an enthusiast, I also realize that my daily driver must contain reasonable safety items and conveniences, or at the least make them available individually or in logically grouped options. I'd also like something as simple as a lamp to illuminate under the hood or my glovebox. My '95 Explorer had both. I recently rented a premium version of that same vehicle. My singed fingers when checking the oil and then later fumbling through the glovebox in the dark convinced me that the pennies they saved (yet still charged for) will keep me from buying their new vehicles.
