The UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) was established to promote and fund research training and institution strengthening designed to increase the participation of developing countries in the development and use of new tools for the prevention and control of tropical diseases. Its long-term mission is to foster self-reliance in the endemic countries by building a critical mass of human resources and scientific knowledge in biomedical and social sciences, in a research environment that is able to respond to public health research needs. Partnerships, networking, and the promotion of equal opportunities in endemic countries constitute the core of the TDR strategy.
