A pitching staff just became more important for baseball teams in District 2-5A thanks to a rule change by the New Mexico Activities Association.
The governing body of state high school athletics is allowing teams to schedule four additional games starting in 2003, increasing the maximum from 22 to 26 games.
Teams in 2-5A are handling the change by agreeing to play district opponents three times per season instead of two. One game will be scheduled during the week; the other two will be played as Saturday doubleheaders.
Teams in Districts 3-5A and 4-5A already follow this format. …
