Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools began the new school year with a special leadership essay contest for seventh-grade students that concluded at the 10th Annual Leadership Summit.

Commissioner Charles D. Jennings of Arkansas City, Kan., serving as the 2002 NLC Leadership Training Council chair, proposed the new activity as a special local community project for the summit.

Council member James E. Mitchell Jr., of the City of Charlotte provided the leadership and overall coordination of the essay project.
