2002 OCT 10 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- In a study supported by Eli Lilly and Co. and published in the September 2002 issue of Fertility and Sterility, researchers at Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the Medical Center for Women's Clinical Research in San Diego and the University of South Florida evaluated the effect of raloxifene, a drug often prescribed to treat and prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis, on the levels of several hormones and proteins in postmenopausal women.
Ninety-three women between the ages of 42 and 80 who were at least 2 years past menopause were enrolled in the study and randomly assigned to either the raloxifene or the placebo group. Eighty-nine completed the study: 46 from the raloxifene group and 43 from the placebo group.
Each participant was evaluated at the start and at the completion of the 3-month study for serum levels of estrogen, estrone, sex steroid-binding globulin, thyroxine-binding globulin, and follicle-stimulating hormone ...
