2002 OCT 9 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- As influenza vaccination recommendations issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) go into effect, and the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) has issued an alert to all Americans to ensure priority vaccination for those groups at highest risk of contracting influenza.
"CDC issued these recommendations to help ensure those at highest risk of influenza infection are the first in line for the vaccine in October, and to advise healthy persons to postpone vaccination until November," said William Schaffner, MD, professor and chairman of the department of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee. "An estimated 20,000 people die and approximately 114,000 are hospitalized from influenza-related complications each year, yet many of these deaths can be prevented by receiving a simple flu shot."
