Man shot after fight over dog, officials say

A man was shot in the chest Monday night after a dispute about a dog, the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office said.

Deamaneo Geathers was taken by helicopter to Medical University Hospital in Charleston, said Maj. Ricky Driggers. His condition was unavailable.

The shooting happened around 9:15 p.m. on Zion Road in the county's Cross community northwest of Moncks Corner.

Almost an hour later, deputies arrested James Smalls, who authorities say fled the scene after the shooting. Smalls will be charged with assault and battery with intent to kill, Driggers said.
