How the grinch-tech stole Christmas
I am the service manager for a small, 11-person shop. To determine which service technician is on call for the six major holidays, we put all the holidays in a hat and each man draws his own destiny. As usual, as it may be, the low man on the totem pole drew Christmas weekend.
We had been very busy due to below-freezing temperatures holding around 10 [deg.] to 13 [deg.] F. I told the tech Friday night to call me if he needed help. I heard from him several times on Saturday and Sunday, and never once did he ask for help or say things were too far behind.
On Christmas Day, as my family was getting ready to go to the grandparents, our phone rang. It was one of my service techs. He had received a phone call from the answering service, and they couldn't locate the man on call, either at home or by calling the pager. I sent my family on their way and went to the office to take care of the calls.
When I called the answering service, I received quite a surprise. They hadn't been able to reach the man on call since around 9 p.m. Christmas Eve. They had 13 calls backed up since then.
