You wouldn't go to the baker for your Sunday roast and yet many printers are turning to IT suppliers for digital asset management (DAM) systems.
DAM has become the trendy buzzword in pre-press circles, but many have failed to recognise that it needs to be something beyond digital storage and retrieval to be a really effective tool.
It has somehow to connect up OPI, to switch between high- and low-res files, and to manage colour space and different file formats. Customers expect printers to be open in the file formats they receive. And the printer may even want to order up a picture for a client in different formats for different production applications. Proofs can be sent via the internet to customers for online approval. The printer's life blood is colour integrity and if that is compromised because the system was not built with the muscle to manage it, money is squandered.
