Cartonboard producers have steadily introduced price rises over the summer, and European prices across the board are now on the move, writes Rachel Barnes.
One supplier said the market had become much stronger in the past few months, after experiencing a relatively quiet first half.
'We've been a lot busier of late and have hit budget in the past two months, which has surprised us. We're holding up well this month too,' he said.
M-real was the first to announce price rises on GC1 and GC2 grades, and other big suppliers have followed its lead.
Iggesund Paperboard and Reno de Medici are both pushing for a pounds 51-per-tonne increase for GC1 and GC2, with Stora Enso announcing a pounds 48-per-tonne increase.
But Mayr-Melnhof is holding off its planned increase of at least 7% for the same grades until October.
One source said: 'We've had some negative feedback but it's looking very likely that the rises will go through. Most leading suppliers have announced increases, but more minor players are holding their cards closer to their chest and will wait and see what happens, ...
