Paper baling risk as standards slip.

A number of fatal accidents involving paper balers are causing concern despite improvements in the paper industry's safety record, according to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE).

Mike Wilcock, head of the HSE's paper and printing national sector group and a member of the Paper and Board Industry Advisory Committee (PABIAC), said that standards of guarding were not being applied, despite published standards being in place.

'I am extremely concerned that people are not isolating the machines before clearing blockages,' he said.

Wilcock said the total of 10 fatal accidents involving balers over the past six to eight years was far too high.
