In Lethbridge, Canbra Foods Ltd. has started a $30-million plant renovation to increase production. But total employment from manufacturing in the city dropped from 3,580 in 1981 to 3,110 in 1986.

In the Medicine Hat area, the large Consumers Glass plant recently closed. This is considered a loss not only to the local economy but to the entire recycling industry in Alberta. Glass containers for recycling now must be shipped to the company's B.C. plant. Overall, the number of manufacturing plants in Medicine Hat declined from 51 in 1980 to 41 last year.
