2002 OCT 3 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Breastfeeding may be good for long-term cardiovascular health according to a study carried out by researchers at St. George's Hospital Medical School in Tooting, England.
The report entitled, "Infant feeding and blood cholesterol: A study in adolescents and a systematic review" is published in the September 3, 2002, Pediatrics, the scientific journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics. By comparing infants, children, adolescents and adults who were breastfed in early life with those who had been formula-fed, the researchers suggested that breastfeeding may have long-term benefits for cardiovascular health. This work may have implications for the content of formula feed milks.
High cholesterol levels in adult life are strong reversible risk factors for coronary heart disease. But there is growing evidence that coronary heart disease risk begins to emerge before adult life. Although cholesterol levels in adults are affected by a number of factors such as diet, obesity, and exercise, there could be underlying risks that stem from what we were fed in early life.
