2002 OCT 2 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Maria G. Essig, MS, ELS, senior medical writer - A need exists for inexpensive pneumococcal vaccines that cover a broad serotype range, according to a review in the Scandinavian Journal of Immunology.
"Streptococcus pneumoniae is a leading cause of bacterial pneumonia, meningitis, and acute otitis media in children and adults worldwide," said T. Wuorimaa and H. Kayhty of the University of Helsinki. "The emergence of resistant strains necessitates the development of an effective vaccine with a large serotype coverage. "
Wuorimaa and Kayhty report that World Health Organization data reveal that each year pneumococcal pneumonia kills at least 1 million children younger than 5 years. Up to 83% of all serious pneumococcal illness is caused by the 11 most prevalent serotypes.
The vaccine offering the widest serotype coverage, the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine, is low-cost but effective only in adults. In contrast, conjugate vaccines, such as the newly released 7-valent conjugate vaccine, are capable of generating a protective immune response in infants.
