Jean Marie Messier's control of Vivendi Universal loosened last Tuesday when he received votes of no confidence from five of the company's board members.
The vote appeared to indicate an increasing estrangement from Universal Music, with all five opponents coming from the old Seagram board--the former owner of the music company. They were led by Seagram founders Edgar Bronfman senior and junior, who sold Seagram to Vivendi at the end of 2000.
