2002 SEP 25 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- U.S. government scientists plan to test a new smallpox vaccine in Orlando, Florida and two other cities.
The tests will determine what dosage protects people against the virus as a biological weapon.
Orlando's study will include 120 people, ages 18 through 29, who have never been vaccinated for smallpox. Other test sites are the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and a private medical center in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The central Florida research, which began in late August 2002, will be done by Orlando Clinical Research Center.
"This is a very timely and very important issue," said Dr. Thomas Marbury, the center's medical director. "When this came across my desk, I felt almost a patriotic need to do it."
Marbury's center, which tests drugs and vaccines, had worked previously with the drug company making the vaccine.
The government is paying a British company, Acambis, $428 million for the fresh vaccines, which are supposed to be delivered by early next year, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.
