Essig, MS, ELS, senior medical writer - Combining laser excision of recurring respiratory papilloma tumors with injection of mumps vaccine into the excision site increased remission rate of recurrent respiratory papilloma (RRP) in children and adults.
Nigel R. T. Pashley, at Presbyterian/St Luke's Hospital in Denver, conducted studies on two groups of patients with RRP to determine if adding adjuvant therapy to laser removal of papilloma tumors would increase remission rate.
In the first study, 11 children with RRP who had been undergoing regular laser excision without adjuvant therapy for at least 1 year were given injections of mumps vaccine into each excision site after removal of a papilloma tumor.
Follow-up of 5 to 19 years revealed disease in 9 (82%) of the 11 children went into remission after 1 to 10 injections (Can mumps vaccine induce remission in recurrent respiratory papilloma? Archives of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, 2002;128(7):783-786).
