2002 SEP 19 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Recent international studies have shown that a patient-applied, immunomodulatory cream (imiquimod cream, 5%) is safe and effective in treating women with the highly contagious sexually transmitted disease, external genital warts.
The two studies, published in a leading gynecology journal, International Journal of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, involved over 700 females across Europe, the Americas, Africa and Australia. The results showed that 75% of women who used imiquimod 5% cream experienced complete clearance of their warts.
Genital warts, caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), are one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. They may look like growths or lumps but in more serious cases, the warts may cluster together forming a cauliflower-like growth. The incidence of genital warts in women is greatest among women aged between 20 and 24 years old.
One difficulty in successfully treating genital warts is they often return a few months after clearance. In these studies, only a small percentage (15%) of patients had their warts return 6 months after finishing treatment. The patients whose warts had returned were advised to reapply the cream for another 16 weeks, which resulted in 75% of these patients completely clearing their warts.
