We commend the Monterey County Herald for its multi-day coverage of the auto frenzy that is the Pebble Beach week. Shame, however, to the photo editor, who in an effort to illustrate Friday's Concorso Italiano, picked for its above-the-fold front-page picture a bright-orange McLaren F1.

Winner Need Not Be Present Dept.

Two of the three winners of the Pebble Beach Concours Raffle were not present when they won, which was just more fodder for raffle emcee Jay Leno: ``I know it's a Volkswagen but come on... we'll fill it with gas!'' Leno called the two absent winners on a cell phone, getting voice mail for the first and the mother of the second, who didn't believe it really was Jay Leno until the comedian held the phone up and had the 800 people on the lawn yell, ``Hi, Mom!''

One winner did show up to claim her PT Cruiser. She drove off the ramp with two DaimlerChrysler execs inside. Leno's advice to her: ``Don't let them trick you, you already won, you don't have to do anything else!''
