It's been 15 years since the last Subie car-cum-pickup rolled off showroom floors and into the hearts and garages of the alternative-minded. The Brat had a small but loyal following, and nostalgia for the little vehicle must have welled deep enough for Subaru to respond with this 21st century version, the Baja. With as many stares as we got in it, we think Subaru might've hit on something. Or maybe it was the Baja's rally lights, banana-yellow paint and Close Encounters plastic cladding. In either case, the Baja is a smooth performer, if a bit underpowered, with Subaru's wonderful awd system keeping things on the straight and narrow. The bed features a flip-out cage over the tailgate and a pass-through into the cabin. And unlike the Brat, the Baja has room for four.
